Underground Walk

a guided tour of interesting places under your feet
Lasts about 2 hours, with 3 miles of walking, including a hill
Starts in front of the foot tunnel dome, near the Cutty Sark
2 pm, Easter Sunday, 23 March 2008
You will discover:

Railway tunnels hidden beneath your feet

Amazing holes our ancestors dug for chalk, gravel, and sand

Where the mediaeval battle of Blackheath Hill was fought

The sewers on which London’s health depends

Where archaeologists dug for Tudor and Roman remains

The spaghetti of utility pipes and cables under streets

Where Jack Cade’s Cavern really lies hidden

How kings, sailors, and commoners got their drinking water

A disused railway line still in its tunnel under the A2

Buried public conveniences and lost tram lines

Surprising cavities under ordinary city pavements

Where famous men and revolting peasants are buried
Your guide is a local scientist and small businessman, whose roots in
Greenwich go back four generations. He will described how geology
influenced local buildings, agriculture, and industry. He will urge you
to love the Quaggy river, to remember Deptford Creek's technological
heritage, and to salute the Victorian heroes who pioneered our sewers
and railways.
This tour is FREE while it is still experimental
